NEW! Internationalized Domain Names Interface:
What does a customer do when they want to generate Web traffic to their site, but the visitors they’re trying to reach will be using non-ASCII characters on their keyboards? The solution is Internationalized Domain Names (IDN). An IDN is a domain name where the non-ASCII characters have been converted to ASCII to be read in web browsers. Non-ASCII characters can range from the entire character system found in Japanese or Hebrew to a few special characters found in French or Italian.
What does an IDN look like? Let’s take a look at BJÖRGVIN.COM. Since this name has a non-ASCII character Ö, the IDN domain will be XN- -BJRGVIN-B1A.COM. The XN- - indicates the domain is encoded, BJRGVIN-B1A is the ASCII version of the original name, and the .COM extension is standard and requires no encoding.

UNIX is a portable, multi-tasking and multi-user computer operating system originally developed by a group at AT&T Bell Labs.
- UNIX can communicate with many different types of computers, it is not limited to a specific brand, type, or operating system.
- Most UNIX operating systems come with a free email program called Sendmail.
- UNIX provides tight administrative control, it has a mechanism for limiting a user’s disk usage in addition to passwords and file permissions.
- UNIX allows shared network filesystems to be mounted at any point in a directory structure. A network share can also span multiple disk drives (or even different machines) in UNIX, thus allowing administrators to maintain pre-existing directory structures that are well-known to users, yet allowing them to expand the available disk space on the server, making such system changes transparent to users.
- UNIX was conceived as a client/server operating system for professional use.
- UNIX operating systems are equipped with scripting languages such as Bourne Shell, Korn Shell, C Shell, and sometimes Perl, and a “cron” facility for scheduling jobs to run at fixed intervals (every n minutes, every n hours, once a week, once a month, etc.). Cron scheduling is highly configurable.
- A great deal of UNIX system administration is automated and customized for site-specific needs, which in effect cuts down on personnel costs.
What companies are using UNIX?
The exact number and type of companies using UNIX servers is difficult to determine however a partial list is below.
Cisco Systems, Several Universities, NASA, Boeing, Amazon.com, Dow Corning, Hotmail, United States Postal Service
Strengths vs. Windows hosting
In a Comparison of Web Hosting Platforms Unix is the most widely used operating system for Internet servers.
- UNIX allows for more flexibility in web site use. The functionality of UNIX allows for more users to access the site and the site features without bogging down.
- UNIX is reliable and stable. No more ‘blue screen of death’. A UNIX server’s uptime can be measured in years whereas a Windows server has to be rebooted frequently. This translates directly into monies earned as who knows how many transactions you are missing while your server is down.
- UNIX has secure systems less vulnerable to attack and has proven dependable. The Windows OS is more vulnerable to security breaches and hackers and is less portable.
- You need technical expertise to run a Unix server while Windows server management is easier to learn and someone with little experience can use advance features quickly.
- Because it is open-source there are many free server applications available and Unix handles high traffic more efficiently. Windows server software on the other hand is more expensive.

Bejing Football Club Wins Chinese Domain Name Dispute
In a recent court decision, the The Beijing First Intermediate People′s Court stated that a Beijing Football Club, Juventus (Juventus), had the right to use the domain name “juventus.com.cn” over Nanjing Yixun Technology Co Ltd who was using that domain.
Nanjing registered the domain name “juventus.com.cn” in June 2003 and set up a fan site. Juventus owned international marks in the term “JUVENTUS” since 1996. It set up a coresponding Chinese website “cn.juventus.com” in March, 2005. One year later, Juventus complained to the Chinese International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission, which decided that Juventus was the rightful owner of “juventus.com.cn” and that the domain should be transferred to them. Nanjing brought the matter to court on appeal.

China’s Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy states that a complainant, in this case, Nanjing, must prove the following in order to win his/her case:
A. The disputed domain name is identical or confusingly similar to a name or mark in which the complainant has civil rights or interests;
B. The holder of the disputed domain name has no right or legitimate interest in respect of the domain name or the major part of the domain name; and
C. The holder of the disputed domain name has registered or has been using the domain name in bad faith.
Basing their decision on those factors, the court stated that even though it was legal for Nanjing to set up a website for fans to use, they did so in bad faith. The court found bad faith existed because Nanjing included commercial links to make a profit on its site and Nanjing registered “juventus.com.cn” knowing that the term “juventus” was a well-known football club in China. Lastly, the court decided that it was evident that in registering the domain, Nanjing sought to make money from the “juventus” name, to mislead end users, and to prevent Juventus from using the domain at issue. Nanjing’s claim of appeal was denied and they were required to transfer the domain “juventus.com.cn” to the Juventus Ball Club, as the rightful owner.
