I was just browsing the net and then I stumbled over an interesting site, which I think is something my readers would gladly use. It is a domain name generator, not the usual stuff. This is pretty sophisticated. This domain name generator lets you select a topic, generates names using several different patterns and checks with Whois, if the generated name is available for registration. To pre-test the tool, go to my domain generator widget, or visit Domain Shouter name suggestion tool, you can also grab a free widget for your own site. But meanwhile, let’s talk to one of the three men behind the Shouter, David Scoville, to learn how it all started.

3APP: How was the DomainShouter born?
David: Me and two other partners, Garry Scoville and Chris London have been working on a business plan to develop some cutting-edge web applications.

However, as we discussed a company identity, we realized that a domain for our company was necessary in order for quality branding. Thus, we began searching for the few remaining available domains. The process was time consuming. We came up with countless business names, only to find that each domain name had been taken. Because of a low budget, we weren’t willing to purchase a domain at the high bid prices.

Chris London, our programming mastermind, began developing an application that would search for all the remaining 5 letter domains. Obviously, the program provided a lot of useless results, but some good ones. Not quite satisfied yet, London went back to the code and created an algorithm that would provide ‘usable’ results. What resulted is now the “Cruncher”. http://www.shoutdomains.com/domain-word-cruncher.php

We analyzed a lot of other domain searching applications on the web. We found some good applications with great features. However, no one application employed all the features in one site. Here are some of the features:

  • Fast results. We really liked instantdomainsearch.com. We like the idea of having domains appear as you type. Currently, Chris is working on speeding up the search process so domain results appear even faster. ShoutDomains.com works mainly client-side. We’d like to also add a server-side version for those who don’t use javascript.
  • Multiple TLDs. Why isn’t there one place to go to search for multiple TLDs? We hope to have the greatest possible number of TLDs available to search for.
  • Save results. We found it nice to be able to save different domains we liked and then print them or export them to a csv file.
  • Secure results. We’ve learned about the problems users have had with Network Solutions - that NS will acquire domains you search for. We wanted the searches to be anonymous and safe. We like saferdomainsearch.com.
  • Word Combiner. Many quality, available domains include two words, like frogdesign.com. We wanted our word combiner to have the most comprehensive list of available words to work with. We compiled long lists of good industry words as well as adjectives. http://www.shoutdomains.com/domain-word-combiner.php

ShoutDomains.com is still in beta, and thus we will continue to make it more efficient and effective for domainers, business owners and bloggers. What
resulted from our use of the Shouter is Kwista.com, our new business name.

3APP: Who’s idea was this domain name generator?
David: Chris London came up with the original idea.

3APP: How many people and how much time did it take to make it?
David: It took the efforts of all three of us, about 1.5 months, off-hours work. Chris coded the entire application. I developed the branding and site design, as well as marketing strategies. Garry compiled word lists and wrote most of the text. Garry carries out business management.

3APP: How was it coded, what language?
David: It was developed mainly with PHP and AJAX.
